The Ideal Communal Starter
Planning for the holiday season triggered a memory of these delectable stuffed mushrooms, a delicacy that has been absent from my culinary exploits for some time now. In the early days of my culinary journey at a well-known inn in the Catskills, mastering the art of hors d’oeuvres was a part of my day-to-day activities, with stuffed mushrooms standing out as guest favorites.
My duties varied from balancing plates of fresh-from-the-oven stuffed mushrooms to alerting guests about their piping-hot temperature. As I honed my skills, I advanced to kitchen duties such as slicing, dicing, cleaning, and yes, stuffing mushrooms. Being in the kitchen also granted me the guilty pleasure of savoring a mushroom or two straight from the oven, unnoticed by the head chef, who happened to be my father.
In Praise of Simplicity
What’s the secret behind a tasty stuffed mushroom? There’s no enigmatic ingredient in these simple stuffed mushrooms – just an array of plain components!
There’s an endless list of potential mushroom fillings: meats, additional mushrooms, bacon, sausages, an assortment of cheeses, and more. However, just like in the world of ice cream where vanilla holds its charm amidst a plethora of flavors, the beauty of the classic stuffed mushroom recipe lies in its simplicity!
Before we embark on the cooking process, here’s a tip for these easy stuffed mushrooms:
Mushrooms naturally have a high water content that is released during cooking. The water from the mushroom coupled with the buttery breadcrumb stuffing creates an optimal stuffed mushroom. Trust me, it’s a game-changer!
Now, let’s dive into our traditional stuffed mushroom recipe, courtesy of the head chef and team at the famous Inn, dating back to 1982!
Ingredients
- 12 ounces of mid-sized white mushrooms (340g)
- 6 tablespoons of salted butter (divided)
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- ½ teaspoon paprika
- ¼ teaspoon salt (or to taste)
- ¾ cup plain or seasoned breadcrumbs
- ⅓ cup grated parmesan cheese
- 1 tablespoon fresh parsley (finely chopped)
Instructions
- Lightly rinse the mushrooms to remove any dirt, taking care not to soak them, as we want to prevent sogginess.
- Gently remove the mushroom stems (they should detach easily, or you can use a knife). Save these for a later use in a vegetable stir-fry, vegetable stock, lo mein, or an omelette! Including them in the stuffing could make it overly moist, which we want to avoid for these successful mushroom caps.
- Dry the mushroom caps with a paper towel, and systematically arrange them on a baking sheet with the cap side upwards.
- Heat the butter in a small saucepan over low heat until just melted. Remove from heat. Lightly brush the mushroom caps with the melted butter, then flip them over so the top side is facing downwards.
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. During preheating, prepare the stuffing. Combine onion powder, granulated garlic, dried thyme, paprika, and salt with the butter until thoroughly mixed. Using a rubber spatula, mix in breadcrumbs until they’re all well-coated with butter. Then, incorporate grated parmesan cheese and finely chopped fresh parsley.
- Spoon the breadcrumb mixture into each mushroom cap, ensuring not to pack the stuffing, which helps keep your stuffed mushrooms light and crumbly. Bake for approximately 9-12 minutes. The mushrooms should be perfectly cooked but still firm enough to handle. Avoid overcooking, or they’ll become droopy and challenging to manage. Serve promptly!
Tips & Notes:
This recipe yields approximately 6 servings, equating to 3-4 mushrooms per person. Enjoy!
Stuffed mushrooms not only satiate the taste buds but also pack a punch of health benefits. They are low in calories, packed with fiber and protein, and provide an excellent source of essential nutrients like B vitamins, selenium, potassium, and copper. Besides, when exposed to sunlight, they can offer a good source of vitamin D.
Moreover, mushrooms are loaded with antioxidants that protect the body from harmful substances known as free radicals and help prevent diseases like heart disease and cancer. Interestingly, they can also help enhance memory and other cognitive functions, proving beneficial for our brain health.
When paired with garlic, as this recipe does, mushrooms can offer enhanced health benefits. Garlic is known for its potential in reducing the risk of heart disease, boosting immune function, and demonstrating anticancer properties. Also, it is recognized for its antibiotic properties.
Add onions to this mix, and you amplify the health benefits even further. Onions are packed with antioxidants and compounds that fight inflammation, decrease triglycerides, and reduce cholesterol levels, thus reducing the risk of heart disease.
So, these delightful stuffed mushrooms not only deliver on taste but also come loaded with health benefits, making them a treat both for your palate and your health!
