Being in the kitchen also granted me the guilty pleasure of savoring a mushroom or two straight from the oven, unnoticed by the head chef, who happened to be my father.

What’s the secret behind a tasty stuffed mushroom? There’s no enigmatic ingredient in these simple stuffed mushrooms – just an array of plain components!
There’s an endless list of potential mushroom fillings: meats, additional mushrooms, bacon, sausages, an assortment of cheeses, and more. However, just like in the world of ice cream where vanilla holds its charm amidst a plethora of flavors, the beauty of the classic stuffed mushroom recipe lies in its simplicity!
Before we embark on the cooking process, here’s a tip for these easy stuffed mushrooms:
Mushrooms naturally have a high water content that is released during cooking. The water from the mushroom coupled with the buttery breadcrumb stuffing creates an optimal stuffed mushroom. Trust me, it’s a game-changer!
Now, let’s dive into our traditional stuffed mushroom recipe, courtesy of the head chef and team at the famous Inn, dating back to 1982!
- 12 ounces of mid-sized white mushrooms (340g)
- 6 tablespoons of salted butter (divided)
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- ½ teaspoon paprika
- ¼ teaspoon salt (or to taste)
- ¾ cup plain or seasoned breadcrumbs
- ⅓ cup grated parmesan cheese
- 1 tablespoon fresh parsley (finely chopped)
- Lightly rinse the mushrooms to remove any dirt, taking care not to soak them, as we want to prevent sogginess.
- Gently remove the mushroom stems (they should detach easily, or you can use a knife). Save these for a later use in a vegetable stir-fry, vegetable stock, lo mein, or an omelette! Including them in the stuffing could make it overly moist, which we want to avoid for these successful mushroom caps.
- Dry the mushroom caps with a paper towel, and systematically arrange them on a baking sheet with the cap side upwards.
- Heat the butter in a small saucepan over low heat until just melted. Remove from heat. Lightly brush the mushroom caps with the melted butter, then flip them over so the top side is facing downwards.
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. During preheating, prepare the stuffing. Combine onion powder, granulated garlic, dried thyme, paprika, and salt with the butter until thoroughly mixed. Using a rubber spatula, mix in breadcrumbs until they’re all well-coated with butter. Then, incorporate grated parmesan cheese and finely chopped fresh parsley.
- Spoon the breadcrumb mixture into each mushroom cap, ensuring not to pack the stuffing, which helps keep your stuffed mushrooms light and crumbly. Bake for approximately 9-12 minutes. The mushrooms should be perfectly cooked but still firm enough to handle. Avoid overcooking, or they’ll become droopy and challenging to manage. Serve promptly!
